The first day of school is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring nervousness and uncertainty for children and parents. With a little preparation, you can make the transition smoother and help your child feel safe, confident, and ready to learn.
Start by talking positively about school and explaining what your child can expect during the day. If possible, visit the school together so your child can become familiar with the classroom, playground, entrance, and other important areas. Practising the morning routine—including waking up, getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing teeth, and packing the school bag—can also make the first morning feel less overwhelming.
It is equally important to prepare your child emotionally. Listen to their worries, reassure them that feeling nervous is normal, and avoid putting pressure on them to adjust immediately. A short, calm goodbye routine can help children manage separation more comfortably.
In the days before school starts, gradually establish an appropriate bedtime and wake-up schedule, prepare school supplies and clothing, and pack the school bag the night before. Encourage your child to practise age-appropriate skills such as putting on shoes, opening their lunch box, using their water bottle, and organising their belongings.
Most importantly, stay calm and supportive. Children often take cues from their parents, so a positive and reassuring approach can help them see school as a safe and exciting new experience. Every child adjusts at their own pace, so give them time, encouragement, and plenty of opportunities to share how they feel.
